NSW: Teenaged meningococcal victim still critical

A 17-year-old New South Wales boy suffering from meningococcal disease remains in acritical but stable condition in Wollongong Hospital.

The boy was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital on Tuesday.

He is a resident of south-western Sydney and had been holidaying in the Illawarra region.

Meningococcal can be fatal in 10 per cent of cases and is caused by a bacteria carriedin the back of the throat.

It can be transferred by kissing or sharing drinks.

Five people from the Illawarra region have contracted the deadly disease this year.

Last week federal health department ruled out a national outbreak of meningococcaldisease after the 17-year old was hospitalised and a South Australian teenager died.

A spokesman for the department says the number of cases is not out of the ordinary.

There had been 113 cases reported nationally as of March 26 this year, compared with138 for the first three months of last year.
