NSW: Native forest logging for power generation outlawed

The New South Wales government says native forests will no longer be logged for power generation.

Premier BOB CARR says power generators will now have to rely on other material suchas residue from plantation forests, exotic woody weeds, and sawmill waste.

Up until now they've also been able to use by-products of native timber harvestingand processing, including stumps and branches.

Mr CARR, who was addressing a Total Environment Centre breakfast in Sydney, says thenew policy is a win for bio-diversity and the environment.
