NSW: Move to exempt Mardi Gras "unfair": opposition
SYDNEY, Feb 7 AAP - Waiving fees for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras was unfairto the struggling charity groups raising money for the community, the NSW opposition saidtoday.
Organisations wanting to stage an event have to pay up to $200,000 for road closuresand the use of police in controlling crowds.
The state government yesterday announced it had decided to exempt charges to the festivalin view of the downturn in tourism following September 11 and the Ansett collapse.
It also exempted fees for the Sydney Marathon.
